Helen White, Ginger Goodrich and Sarah Elliott lead Gospel study groups at several Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Pennsylvania (located in the southeast portion of the state, specifically Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties). Our goal is to encourage other church communities — regardless of denomination — to adopt this approach to Gospel study as a primary tool for “equipping the saints for ministry.”
Gospel studies using this approach began in the Philadelphia area when Dr. H.B. Sharman came to Pendle Hill, a Quaker education center, to teach in 1930. When he retired in 1933, his student Dora Willson continued leading classes at Pendle Hill, followed by her student Mary Morrison [dates?]. In the [1970s?] the rector of St. Thomas’ Church in Fort Washington, PA, invited Mary to help launch a Gospel study group at St. Thomas’. Mary mentored St. Thomas’ parishioner Helen White to lead groups using this approach. Over the last [30?] years, Helen has led numerous biblical study groups, planted new Gospel study groups, and mentored many new group facilitators, including Ginger Goodrich who in turn mentored Sarah Elliott.
